Players who are looking for an online casino with free spins in Australia might be surprised to find that real-money gambling isn’t allowed. Fortunately, there is a legal and fun alternative available to players: sweepstakes casinos.
A sweepstakes casino doesn’t involve real-money gaming, but it does give you the opportunity to play casino-style pokies and other games. Some of these gaming sites even offer live casinos. Inside this guide you’ll find out exactly what a sweepstake casino is and why so many players flock to them. Read on for all the details…
As mentioned a moment ago, it’s impossible for Australians to play at a traditional online casino, as these sorts of real-money gaming sites aren’t legal. However, the good news is that playing at a sweepstakes casino is the next best thing, and you can pick up free spins. Here’s a quick explanation of these sites…
Instead of using real money, a sweepstakes casino uses a dual virtual currency system that consists of Gold Coins (GC) and Sweeps Coins (SC). You’ll use the Gold Coins to play all the pokies and table games for fun and entertainment purposes only. You can then play these same games in promotional mode using Sweeps Coins, which gives you an opportunity to collect redeemable Sweeps Coins. Provided you meet the requirements, any eligible SC can be redeemed for real prizes.
Just as you might see a traditional online casino no-deposit bonus in Australia, sweepstakes casinos offer no-purchase bonuses (since you can’t make a deposit at these sites). Most sweepstakes casinos offer a welcome bonus of both Gold Coins and Sweeps Coins, with opportunities to collect more virtual currency through mail-in requests, login bonuses, referral bonuses, VIP rewards, and more. Some of these sites offer free spins directly, while in most cases you’ll simply get enough virtual currency that you can get free spins on any of the site’s pokies.
Another way that these sites offer free spins is by giving players a chance to spin a prize wheel on a daily basis. When this opportunity is available, you’ll usually collect a random amount of Gold Coins, Sweeps Coins, or both with every spin of the wheel.
Here’s a quick look at the differences between sweepstakes casinos and traditional casinos:
| Feature | Traditional online casino | Sweepstakes casino |
|---|---|---|
| Currency | Real money | Gold Coins and Sweeps Coins |
| What can you win or collect? | Cash | Sweeps Coins that can be redeemed for real prizes |
| What games are available? | Slots, crash games, arcade games, table games, live casino games, etc. | Slots, crash games, arcade games, table games, live casino games, etc. |
| Free spins available occasionally? | Yes | Yes |
If you use your Sweeps Coins at a sweepstakes casino, then you may get the opportunity to collect redeemable Sweeps Coins. These gaming sites usually have three rules in place for redemptions:
If you meet these requirements, you can navigate to the site’s cashier and find the Redeem button, where you can initiate a redemption. Most of these types of sites take ten days or less to process the request and deliver the prize to you.
Some players may hunt for the fastest payout online casinos in Australia, but it’s important to understand that sweepstakes casinos offer redemptions, not “payouts,” since you’re not using real money to play the games.
To answer the question: since this type of gaming is still fairly new in Australia, there aren’t too many options available currently. However, we like RooVegas for their game variety, bonuses, and fast redemptions.
Let’s take a closer look…
This sweepstakes casino welcomes you in the door with a large welcome bonus of 500,000 Roo Coins (AKA Gold Coins) and 10 Spin Coins (AKA Sweeps Coins), which gives you plenty of virtual currency to explore the site’s 1000+ pokies and live-dealer games. The brand offers additional opportunities to pick up virtual currency through daily logins, bonus drops on social media, leaderboard and tournament events, mail-in requests, and first purchase boosts or other purchase promos, which are always optional.
The brand offers player-friendly redemption policies, which include a 1x playthrough requirement. You only need to collect 50 redeemable Spin Cash before initiating a redemption, which processes in one to five days, depending on the option you chose.

Yes, RooVegas offers a generous welcome bonus and ongoing opportunities to collect additional virtual currency, so you can spin the reels hundreds or potentially thousands of times for free.
The KYC (know your customer) identity verification requirements are in place to combat money laundering and other criminal activity. When you create an account at a sweepstakes casino, be sure that the information you provide in your account exactly matches the information on your government-issued identification. For example, use your full legal name on your account rather than a nickname, which will help prevent any redemption delays.
Players who are searching for Visa online casinos in Australia need to remember that traditional casinos aren’t available in the country. However, sweepstakes casinos like RooVegas accept Visa if you decide to make a purchase.
