Mobile online casinos aren’t available in Australia because real money gaming sites are currently barred. So if you’re looking to enjoy games like pokies, classic table games, and live games, you may be curious to know what options exist.
Turns out sweepstakes casinos are viable alternatives to have on your radar. And as you read on, we’ll be sharing more about these mobile-friendly sites, including how they work, the full range of games you can play, and why you don’t have to spend anything to enjoy these titles. Top of our list is Roo Vegas.
If you’re curious and have been asking, are online casinos in Australia legal? The answer is no, not at the moment. The Interactive Gambling Act 2001 prohibits online casinos, so real money online gaming sites alongside in-play sports betting are off limits right now. There are land-based casinos you can visit, but that’s not quite like playing from your mobile phone anywhere and at any time. You aren’t without options, though. Sweepstakes casinos are viable alternatives where you can play your favorite games online.
Sweepstakes casinos are very much available and open for you to play as an Aussie. These free-to-play gaming sites operate differently from real money casinos. Instead of using real cash, sweepstakes casinos allow you to play hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of casino-style games using virtual currencies called Gold Coins and Sweeps Coins.
The names may vary slightly with a few different brands, but there are usually two virtual currencies, and each one serves a distinct purpose at these alternatives to online casinos in Australia.
We’ve put together a table that sums up how they work:
| Virtual currency | What it’s used for | How to get it | Can it be redeemed for prizes? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gold Coins (GC) | Fun gaming only | Free sign-up bonuses, daily rewards, referral bonuses, or purchased in optional GC bundles | No |
| Sweeps Coins (SC) | To play games in the promotional sweepstakes mode | Can only be received for free through bonuses and as add-ons if you ever decide to purchase optional Gold Coin bundles | Yes, after the terms have been met |
Right now, Roo Vegas is our sole recommended sweepstakes casino for Aussies. This brand delivers hundreds of premium games, generous bonuses, reliable customer support, easy Sweeps Coin redemptions, and a website that’s incredibly easy to use.
Roo Vegas has over 800 games, that’s saying a lot for a brand that launched in late 2025. This alternative to new online casinos in Australia delivers a very varied game library. Pokies make up most of the catalog, but there’s plenty more here, including table games, instant win games like Dice, scratchcards, exclusive titles from Roo Studios, and over a dozen social live dealer games. Developers include NetEnt, Betsoft, Evoplay, Evolution, ICONIC21, Netgaming, and JILI.
New players here are welcomed with 500,000 Roo Coins and 10 Spin Coins, but there’s more after that. You’ll have access to daily bonuses of 1 Spin Coin, social media promos, and a rewarding VIP program.
Roo Coins are similar to Gold Coins used at other sweepstakes casinos, as they’re strictly for fun gaming. Spin Coins, on the other hand, are Roo Vegas’ version of Sweeps Coins. Your Spin Coins are converted to Spin Cash after they’ve been used in gameplay. Spin Cash is redeemable for real-life prizes if you have at least 50 Spin Cash and have verified your account.
Certain features take priority when choosing your preferred sweepstakes casino. A mobile-optimised site is important, but this isn’t the only feature you’ll find in sweepstakes casinos. Here are other features you’ll find at sweepstakes casinos that help deliver a well-rounded gaming experience.
Roo Vegas ticks all the right boxes here.

Not at all. The Interactive Gambling Act 2001 prohibits online casino gaming, so these are off limits. However, sweepstakes casinos are good alternatives because they let you play all the available games using virtual currencies and not real money.
There aren’t any real-money online casino apps for players in Australia, but you can have fun playing at mobile-optimised sweepstakes casinos like Roo Vegas.
Yes, you definitely can. Sweepstakes casinos have a strict no-purchase-necessary policy, and they offer various free bonuses to back this up. By signing up, checking in daily, or joining contests and other fun challenges, you can collect bonuses that can be used to play for free.
